Hi there, I’m Klaas. I offer consultancy, coaching and development for all things Web Performance & Sustainability. My mission is to help make the web faster, more efficient, more inclusive and less carbon intensive.
What I offer
What Matters to Me and How It Reflects on This Website
Web Performance and Sustainability play a significant role in my work. Therefore, I strive to implement best practices on this website and continuously improve them, even though I recognize that it doesn’t generate massive traffic. The goal is for this website to load quickly and maintain a low payload (less than 100kB per page load).
My Understanding of Web Sustainability is aligned with the principles of the Sustainable Web Manifesto, encompassing ecological sustainability as well as other vital aspects like accessibility and social sustainability. The Manifesto serves as the foundation for the ongoing development of this website.
Currently, the domain is hosted by OVH, considered a green host. However, a closer look reveals that the servers in France primarily draw energy from the national grid, which relies heavily on nuclear power. While this energy source is efficient in terms of CO2 emissions and green by some definitions, I believe it’s not optimal.
For this reason, I will soon migrate the website to a more sustainable host. I document these and other improvements in my blog to maintain transparency.
What I write about
In my blog, I cover topics related to web performance and sustainability. I focus on posts where I believe I can offer genuine value. In an age of uncontrolled, AI-generated content, I believe it’s essential to support all my insights and claims with trustworthy references. I use (gen)AI tools to help with translation from German to English or to refine some phrasings. Here are my latest posts.

For the third part of the WRAPS series, I looked at the websites of well-known NGOs focusing on environmental and climate protection. he results show that even climate organisations do not have sustainability on their radar when it comes to web development.

Sticking to US products make us dependent on, be influenced by, and expose private data to an increasingly hostile opponent.

Font Preloads and CORS, it's complicated. Especially because inconsistent browser behaviour can lead into a dilemma, which causes useless data transfer and reduces performance.

This year's Web Almanach shows some interesting developments in the web. Not all of them encouraging, though.

This edition of WRAPS focuses on Fair Fashion shopping platforms. They are selling fair and green clothing, but are their websites built sustainably?
- I have signed the Sustainable Web Manifesto, which means I’ve committed to applying all its principles in my work.
- In their Universal Registration Document they commit to contributing to the global Net Zero by 2030. I think that’s great, but they also mention that this will be achieved by relying on nuclear power.
